10 Tips for Boosting Email Open Rates

If you have spent time writing compelling copy for your email and making it look great, the last thing you want is for prospective customers to delete it before they even open it.  Here are 10 great tips that you can follow which will boost your email open rates...

  • Make sure that your emails are sent from a meaningful "friendly" From address. Often, this will be your company name or something, such as a product or brand name, that a prospective customer will relate to immediately
  • Use wording in the Subject that is interesting and enticing. "January Newsletter" is not very inspiring where as "Find out how to fix..." is more appealing and more likely to encourage the recipient to open the email
  • Confirm the validity of all new subscribers by sending a friendly, welcome email as soon as they sign up
  • Use the welcome email as an opportunity to invite the contact to add you to their "Safe Senders" list
  • Be sure that your email doesn't fall foul of any spam filters by using iceMailer's in-built Spam Checker to analyse your email's content
  • Avoid using large graphics in your email's content and make sure that the proportion of graphics to text is acceptable. iceMailer's Spam Checker will warn you if you push the graphics / text balance too far
  • Don't use lots of different colours for text or for links
  • Don't include an excessive number of links relative to the amount of text in your email
  • Use iceMailer's "Inbox Preview" tool to check how your email template displays in different email clients, such as Outlook, Google Mail, Lotus Notes, Mac Mail etc
  • Avoid suspicious subject lines that includes words such as "free" or "special offer", for instance. Similarly, words in FULL CAPS or with lots of exclamation marks!!!!! should be avoided to. If it's approppriate to include the word "free" in your email, consider designing the email so "free" can be included as part of a graphic rather than in the email's body text
